YFNW at the 2024 Labour Conference

On 22nd September 2024, members from the YFNW Steering Group and the For Planet Steering Group went to the Labour Party Conference 2024 and held fascinating conversations with so many exciting ideas shared. We very much enjoyed exploring the conference, taking part in the various activities and collecting freebies such as tote bags, badges, lanyards and Lush bath bombs would you believe!

They joined #BeeWell, Kate Green (GMCA Deputy Mayor), & Luciana Berger for a panel on youth wellbeing & health. Co-chaired by young people from Youth Focus with attendees from #ForPlanet.

I had the best day at the Labour conference with youth focus north west as part of the steering group. The day was filled with so many amazing experiences from networking and finding out information to meeting my MP and speaking to open the youth zone. It was such a surreal experience that enhanced my knowledge and gave me a platform for my voice to be heard. I’ll be forever grateful for this experience! ✨💫

We loved the opportunity to network with many politicians, MPs and the various organisations and pressure groups at the conference. It was extremely interesting to hear about so many issues impacting us and the young people in our North West community! We also had the opportunity to speak in a podcast with Walton Youth and Community Project, speaking about the importance of youth voice.

Youth Focus NW and Bee Heard collaborated to deliver a panel in the Youth Zone discussing how youth work can be beneficial for young people’s physical and mental health. Amy, who is a member on the For Planet Steering Group, was on the panel as well as a member of Bee Heard, Kate Green and Luciana Berger. The panel was also hosted and the Q&A was chaired by our Steering Group members – Joyce and Alishba. All 3 young people spoke incredibly well in front of all the decision makers in the room, Joyce and Alishba were absolutely brilliant at hosting and chairing while Amy did an amazing job explaining the For Planet app and answering the questions from the audience.

Closing our day at the conference was the Youth Zone Opening Reception, hosted by our Steering Group members Anna and Ruby. Both young people did a fantastic job delivering their speech, highlighting the importance of decision makers actively listening to young people. It was at this reception where we got the opportunity to hear from Helen Hayes MP who is the new chair of the House of Commons Select Committee, Emily Spurrell who is Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside as well as several other guest speakers. Overall, we had such an interesting and insightful day at the Labour Party Conference 2024, it was an incredible experience for all of us to have the platform to share our views on many issues impacting young people.

Thank you to the Labour Party for inviting us to attend and speak at the conference and a huge thank you to Youth Focus NW and especially Stuart, George and Ebe for organising our day, we really enjoyed it!
